Software supports engineering, design and OM of fieldbus instrumentation systems

December 2000

Intergraph Corporation has announced Version 5.1 of IN-Tools instrumentation engineering. Pat Thomson, Business Unit Manager at Intergraph Systems Southern Africa, commented: “IN-Tools 5.1 offers significant improvements and new features, including fieldbus support, As-built/Project data entry and viewing as well as enhanced Smartloop capabilities.”

Other new features include report title blocks, multipage data sheets, and an improved Import module and instrument index quick search. In a single, integrated Microsoft Windows environment, IN-Tools 5.1 provides functionality for most instrumentation life cycle engineering, design and data management tasks. Controlwize, a business partner of Intergraph Systems, is the local supplier of IN-Tools.
Ensure accuracy of fieldbus systems design
IN-Tools 5.1 is the only commercially available instrumentation engineering and design software that supports fieldbus. With IN-Tools 5.1, instrumentation and control engineers can now design, document and manage data for fieldbus systems. Drag-and-drop functionality enables users to assign instruments to segments and segments to I/O channels. Engineers can create connections and view segment maps.
IN-Tools 5.1 provides for definition of pin and socket connections, junction boxes, the maximum number of devices per spur and per segment and the maximum assigned function blocks per I/O card. Users can define design requirements, such as power supply current and voltage, maximum allowable cable length and other characteristics to ensure accuracy of design verification. Engineers can also define fieldbus restrictions and rules and add fieldbus-specific pages to instrument data sheets.
Project design isolated from as-built information
As-built/project features enable users to make system additions and changes for projects without affecting the documented, as-built instrument database for the operating plant. For example, engineers working on a plant expansion project can add new instruments and toggle between project and as-built views of the data or view both simultaneously. Colour-coded entries, as in terminal strip view, easily distinguish as-built connections from those added or modified in the project. The new project data resides in the same database as the existing as-built plant data and is easily merged into as-built information storage when the project is commissioned.
SmartLoop enhancements allow faster display of complex loops
The enhanced SmartLoop feature, which enables users to edit loops directly from diagrams, now includes additional loop configurations, supports more complex loops and allows faster display and editing. SmartLoop does not require an external, expensive CAD program and instead provides on-the-fly display and the capability to graphically modify the underlying data.
IN-Tools 5.1 supports the entire life cycle of the plant, from design and construction to operation and maintenance, including retrofits. The IN-Tools 5.1 software suite includes integrated modules for instrument indexes, specifications, process data, calculation, wiring, loop drawings, hook-ups, commissioning, calibration and maintenance.
IN-Tools 5.1 features a straightforward, easy-to-use interface that reduces training needs and increases productivity and provides design and data consistency checks that reduce errors and improve data accuracy. Because IN-Tools 5.1 offers users a choice of databases, migrating existing instrumentation design data from an existing database to IN-Tools is cost and time-effective. Using either Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, or Sybase SQL Anywhere databases, IN-Tools features data links to external systems including the Intergraph Plant Design System (PDS), Intergraph SmartPlant P&ID, SAP R/3, non-Intergraph plant design software, vendor calculation packages and distributed control systems. Intergraph SmartPlant Explorer 3.1 users can access, browse, view instrument and wiring details and report on IN-Tools project data.
