3D CAD used for third international award for design company

1 April 2000

Cape Town-based specialist retail design company, Liz Muller Design, has walked away with the 1999 International Store Design Award for Best Retail Design - New York. The design project entered was a 10m2 kiosk, the Eyelights sunglasses outlet situated in the walkway of the V&A; Waterfront shopping complex. Liz Muller beat 11 000 entries from 150 countries. This is the third international award for the company. In 1995, Stuttafords Sandton was acclaimed for both Store Design and Visual Merchandising.
The winning kiosk design was judged on the submitted plans and elevations with detailed sections which were drawn on Caddie computer aided design systems and a written description supported by professional photographs. Full design of the kiosk took two designers two weeks to complete and consisted of a total of 20 drawings.
Liz Muller explains that the Eyesight kiosk presented an interesting challenge as the merchandise had to be displayed to best advantage with strong branding while the kiosk itself had to blend with the rest of the shopping mall. The main objective was to increase visibility of the kiosk throughout the mall. This was achieved by positioning the display columns at the centre of the run of counters and to dramatise the counters through lighting. The front counter grabs the attention of shoppers on both the upper and lower levels. Storage space has been used to optimum with clever foldaway panels and slide out trays. A mobile showcase unit on a slide out track system provides access without sacrificing retail space. Once this unit is in the closed position it is difficult to identify the access point thereby minimising security risks.
So successful has this project been that Liz is now contracted to redesign all the other walkway kiosks at the Waterfront. Other major clients include John Orrs, Peter Stuyvesant, Spectra Diamonds, Eastgate Shopping Centre, Sandton Square and the worldwide franchise of Chrysalis Linen.
To simplify system compatibility, Liz actively persuaded the 30 or so shop fitters, contractors, architects, lighting engineers etc with whom she deals with to only work on Caddie. She cites user-friendliness and local back-up support as the important incentive. Caddie's new 3D version will further enhance our client presentations.
