Lurgi implements Intergraph Plant Design System

1 April 2001

Lurgi SA, a wholly owned subsidiary of Lurgi in Germany, chose the Intergraph Plant Design System (PDS) for its local requirements in petrochemical and mining plant design. Lurgi plans, designs, supplies and builds turnkey plants or plant units for diverse applications worldwide. The campany's products and focus of work are concentrated on the following activities: metallurgy; hydrocarbons, gas and chemicals; environmental technologies; energy and power plant technology as well as polymers and synthetic fibres.
The solution chosen by Lurgi SA includes Intergraph's SmartPlant P&ID, PDS/Isogen, SmartPlant Review and INtools, and is used in the design of plant for Sasol's Syngas Conditioning Unit.
Ivan du Plooy, Senior Piping Designer, Lurgi SA, commented that one of the main advantages of using the Intergraph system is the interface to the Oracle database. The front-end engineering and design phase of the plant lifecycle involves a complex set of data from many different sources. Re-using and managing front-end data throughout the complete plant lifecycle is key to lowering the total lifecycle costs.
Another feature of the Intergraph system that will be extremely valuable to Lurgi is the interference checking capability, which identifies physical clashes between design components. The software also pinpoints 'soft' interferences such as insufficient safety clearances or maintenance access. The model can be checked for interferences at any stage in the design process.
SmartPlant P&ID; is a rule-based engineering solution that creates intelligent piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs) and other schematic drawings while building a comprehensive data model. The product's data-centric approach differs radically from traditional graphics-driven P&ID; solutions. Data-centricity allows process system-specific filtering and interfaces with other solutions to update the data model and the P&ID, providing an 'enter data once' concept.
The INtools instrumentation design and engineering software suite includes integrated modules for instrument indexes, specifications, process data, calculation, wiring, loop drawings, hook-ups, calibration and maintenance. The software features a straightforward, easy-to-use interface that reduces the need for training and increases productivity, and provides design and data consistency checks that reduce errors and improve data accuracy. Using either Oracle or Microsoft SQL Server databases, the software features data links to external systems, including the Intergraph Plant Design System, SAP R/3, vendor calculation packages and distributed control systems (DCS). INtools runs on the Microsoft Windows family of operating systems.
SmartPlant Review allows in-depth data and 3D model navigation for design, construction and maintenance with a familiar Microsoft user interface. SmartPlant Review offers users the opportunity to customise the product to meet their individual needs. Familiar menus and navigation tools help lower training costs. SmartPlant review includes superior shading and rendering performance, customisable screen set-up, dynamic motion control with mouse or joystick navigation and other innovative features that aid in communicating your design to client, project members and manager.
PDS supplies extensive reference data, such as a component library, in compliance with international engineering standards. PDS provides more than 1300 plant components for equipment, piping and instrumentation. The predefined components library can also be expanded and modified by users to meet project or client needs.
Du Plooy concluded: "The Intergraph PDS system provides Lurgi with the automation required to improve productivity, specification-driven design and checking for improved accuracy and interference checking to reduce or eliminate field rework."
