University selects Solid Edge as standard 3D mechanical CAD system

1 November 2001

The Design Engineering Laboratory at the University of Tokyo selected Solid Edge as its standard mechanical computer-aided design (CAD) system.
Solid Edge will be implemented as the 3D CAD system for mechanical design and draughting instruction for all three of the university's mechanical departments focused on engineering, engineering synthesis, and mechanical information technology.
In 1986, the University of Tokyo was the first among all of Japan's universities to offer classes for mechanical design and draughting using CAD. Since then, the university has continued to provide advanced mechanical design education in line with future technology and industry trends, producing a regular supply of talented engineers to Japanese industry. Dr Murakami, Associate Professor of the Design Engineering Laboratory, is researching the application of Solid Edge into more advanced mechanical design and draughting curricula.
"We are researching various Solid Edge applications for our educational curricula. A CAD system used for university education must employ state-of-the-art technologies and the relevant advanced capabilities that engineers will need in industry. It also is essential that CAD be quick and easy to learn and provide high levels of skills to first-time users," says Dr Murakami.
Written for Microsoft Windows NT, Windows 98, Windows 2000 and Windows ME operating systems, Solid Edge is distributed in eight languages to customers around the world, including Boeing, Kaiser Optical, Alcoa, Volvo, L-3 Communications, Ohio State University and Yale University.
