Fact or fiction?

1 June 2002

Ever been sucked in by one of those masterful artistic impressions when buying a house 'off plan'? Noticed how the spacious rooms just shrunk around you as the furniture moved in? Easy - there are no back walls.
Bentley's Microstation rendering tool Masterpiece aims to ensure that what you see is what you get and allows one to move around the rooms, turn around, and get another. The images below were rendered by Cape Town-based Dimension Modeling using MicroStation MasterPiece.
The client required an accurate lighting scene of the entrance and boardroom area of the building. After completing the 3D model, the custom made furniture is placed, as well as the imported furniture in the respective areas. Lights were specified from a local manufacturer, and we linked the corresponding IES files to our lights in the 3D model. The scene was rendered using Bentley's Particle Trace rendering engine.
The architects used the 3D model created to resolve detail design problems as well as deciding on the materials to use for the building. Photographs of actual tiles, etc. were used for finishing. After completing the model, the main interior was rendered using Particle Tracing with accurate IES files linked to the light sources.
The Oubaai golf development was modelled for marketing purposes. Houses were placed on the digital terrain model and rendered to give prospective customers a realistic impression of the golf environment created.
