Durban school adds another dimension to technical drawing

1 October 2002

Senior learners at Durban's George Campbell Technical High School are adding 3D model-based design technology to their traditional technical drawing accessories and simple computer-aided design (CAD) drawing packages. The first high school in the country to purchase the technology has learners replacing pencils, T-squares, and drawing boards with computers and world-class mechanical design software.
Autodesk Africa managing director, Errol Ashwell, whose company develops the design technology, explains that the software - Autodesk Inventor Series - was created specially for 2D users of software, like AutoCAD, who want to transition to 3D design.
"With the Autodesk Inventor Series, mechanical designers can continue working in a familiar 2D environment, and at the same time slowly start introducing our 3D technology. The Autodesk Inventor Series makes it easy to move on."
George Campbell Technical High School deputy principal, Jacques van Leeuwen, says the technology is a perfect fit for the school's learners. "Scholars will learn to create digital designs in both 2D and 3D. They will also be exposed to concepts like concurrent engineering and the sharing of design information over the Internet."
He goes on to say: "Although the extension of the curriculum to include 3D design exceeds Department of Education requirements, it is in line with the school's policy to equip its learners with marketable skills." KwaZulu-Natal's sole Autodesk Accredited System Centre, AfricaBlue, organised the implementation of the software at George Campbell Technical High School. It will also be training teachers to utilise the technology. In line with Autodesk's educational pricing policy, the technology has been made available to George Campbell Technical High School at less than 10% of the commercial price.
