Solution provider places multimillion dollar order for EDS software

1 February 2003

EDS recently announced that Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) has placed a multimillion dollar order for Unigraphics NX software and services.
Heidelberg, a leading solution provider for the print media industry, will use Unigraphics NX as its corporate standard for all product development in its large sheet-fed offset print business line.
Heidelberg's decision followed a comprehensive benchmark between the company's two currently installed computer-aided design, manufacturing and engineering (CAD/CAM/CAE) software systems and their suppliers. Based on the results of that benchmark, Heidelberg selected EDS and its Unigraphics NX software to create a consistent CAD environment. The company placed an initial order for 350 licences of Unigraphics NX, replacing an equal number of software licences of a legacy system from one of EDS' competitors.
Heidelberg designed its benchmark using the following six categories for evaluation:
* General functionality including part modelling, assembly handling, usability, integrated finite element modelling (FEM) and kinematics analysis.

* Data migration.

* Quality of interface to SAP-PLM business software.

* Required investment in hardware, software, implementation services and training.

* Level of integration between CAD and CAM.

* Market position of the supplier.
"We are particularly pleased to be selected as Heidelberg's corporate standard for product development," said Jim Duncan, EDS PLM solutions president for Europe. "This reinforces the global success of Unigraphics NX in the machinery marketplace and particularly our success in Germany. It does credit not only to our people and technologies, but also to our Open by Design strategy for integrating into the real world environment of our clients."
Heidelberg is using a product known as 'PLM4UG' from software vendor DSC as a direct link between Unigraphics NX and SAP-PLM.
