Ottr test for fiber optic cable breakage

Use an OTDR to detect fiber breaks by sending light pulses through the cable and analyzing backscattered signals to pinpoint faults and measure distances.

Preparing for OTDR Testing

Select the appropriate OTDR for your fiber type: multimode (850/1300 nm) or singlemode (1310/1550/1625 nm). Gather launch and receive cables of the same fiber type and size as the cable under test. The launch cable helps eliminate the OTDR's dead zone, while the receive cable allows measurement of the final connector loss.

Ensure connectors and adapters are clean and in good condition to avoid false readings. Power on the OTDR and allow it to warm up. Check battery levels and configure test parameters such as wavelength and pulse width based on fiber length.

Connecting the Fiber

Attach the launch cable to the OTDR output port. Connect the fiber under test to the far end of the launch cable. Optionally, attach a receive cable at the far end of the fiber to measure the last connector's loss.

Performing the Test

Start the OTDR measurement and wait for the trace to stabilize.

The OTD

R sends short, high-intensity light pulses down the fiber. Monitor the backscattered and reflected signals. Breaks, bends, splices, and connectors cause changes in the reflected light, producing spikes or drops in the OTDR trace.

Analyze the trace: Reflective peaks indicate connectors or mechanical splices. Non-reflective losses indicate fusion splices, bends, or breaks. A sudden drop to zero backscatter typically signals a fiber break.

Interpreting Results

Distance to fault: The OTDR calculates the distance to each event based on the time delay of the backscattered light. Loss measurement: Compare backscatter levels before and after events to determine insertion loss. Documentation: Save trace files and event tables for future reference and network maintenance.

Best Practices

Always clean connectors before testing to avoid false positives. Use appropriate pulse width: longer pulses for long fibers, shorter pulses for high-resolution detection of nearby faults. Verify automatic event detection manually using cursor functions to ensure accuracy.

Regular OTD

R testing helps prevent network downtime and maintain fiber health. By following these steps, an OTDR can accurately detect fiber optic cable breakage, locate faults, and provide detailed information on cable performance for maintenance or troubleshooting.
