OPPC Fiber Optic Cable Installation

OPPC fiber optic cable installation requires careful handling, controlled tension stringing, proper fittings, and thorough testing to ensure both mechanical integrity and optical performance.

Preparation and Safety

Before installation, data preparation is essential, including the transmission line diagram, tower parameters, and local environmental conditions. Installation tools should be prepared according to the routing situation, and all personnel must be trained in construction techniques and safety procedures. Accident prevention regulations and standards such as DIN 48 207, EN 50182, or ANSI/IEEE 524-1980 should be followed.

Cable drums must be transported horizontally, and tipping or throwing is strictly prohibited to prevent damage.

Handling and Transport

Keep protective material on the cable until installation. Inspect the cable for damage before stringing. Move cable drums only in the direction counter to unwinding.

Avoid bending the cable sharply or pulling over edges.

Stringing and Tensioning

Tension stringing is recommended to maintain constant tension throughout the process. Use a hauling rope compatible with the cable diameter. Construction tension should generally be within 10% of the rated tensile strength (RTS), not exceeding 20% RTS.

Initial stringing speed: 5 m/min; after passing towers: 30 m/min, maximum 40 m/min. Ensure the optical cable does not jump out of pulleys and maintain proper sag (typically 2–3 m for through-tension towers),.

Fittings and Accessories

Tension fittings, suspension fittings, and lightning protection dampers must be installed according to manufacturer instructions. Joint boxes and termination units should provide IP67 protection against water and humidity, and mechanical protection for the fibers. Use preformed armor rods and proper clamping tools to avoid fiber damage during straining.

Fiber Connection and Testing

Intermediate and terminal joint boxes should be installed according to tower type and project plan.

Perform OTD

R testing to measure fiber loss and record parameters. Conduct bidirectional testing, including unidirectional fiber welding loss and bidirectional average loss, and maintain complete records.

Best Practices

Avoid sharp bends, turn-backs, and twisting; use figure-8 loops when laying cable on surfaces to prevent torsion. Minimize mechanical pressure at crossing points, especially for armored cables. Maintain installation and storage temperatures within the cable's specified limits.

Ensure all personnel are trained in handling, stringing, and testing procedures to prevent damage and ensure long-term reliability. Following these guidelines ensures that OPPC fiber optic cables are installed safely, maintain optical performance, and provide reliable data transmission while also serving their protective function against lightning and short-circuit currents.
