Basic Principle Block Diagram of Relay Protection

A protective relay detects abnormal electrical conditions and sends a trip signal to a circuit breaker to isolate the faulted section.

Functional Overview

A protective relay system operates in a sequence of steps to ensure safe and selective fault isolation: Sensing Elements: Current transformers (CTs) and voltage transformers (PTs) measure electrical quantities such as current, voltage, frequency, and phase angle in the power system. Relay Logic / Decision Unit: The relay continuously compares measured values against preset thresholds or logic conditions. If a fault is detected (e.g., overcurrent, differential current, or voltage deviation), the relay generates a trip signal.

Trip Output: The relay sends a control signal to the circuit breaker or other interrupting device. This signal may also trigger alarms or block operations in coordinated protection schemes. Circuit Breaker Operation: The breaker physically interrupts the current flow, isolating the faulted section to prevent equipment damage and maintain system stability.

Feedback / Monitoring: Some systems include feedback loops to confirm breaker operation and relay status, ensuring reliability and enabling coordination with upstream or downstream protection devices. They operate on principles such as electromagnetic attraction or electromagnetic induction depending on the relay type.

Types of relays include overcurrent, differential, distance, directional, and pilot relays, each suited for specific protection zones and applications. Proper coordination of relay settings, CT/PT inputs, and breaker timing is essential for selective and reliable protection. This block diagram captures the core principle of relay protection, showing the flow from fault detection to isolation while highlighting the functional components involved.
