Fiber optic transceivers categorized by common pigtails

LC and SC pigtails are the most commonly used fiber optic pigtails in transceivers, with FC, ST, MU, and E2000 also used depending on application and network requirements.

Overview of Fiber Optic Pigtails

A fiber optic pigtail is a short optical fiber cable with a factory-terminated connector on one end and a bare fiber on the other, designed to be fusion or mechanically spliced to a fiber optic cable in the field. Unlike patch cords, which have connectors on both ends, pigtails provide a low-loss, reliable connection between backbone cables and active equipment such as transceivers, patch panels, or optical distribution frames. They are widely used in single-mode networks (99% of applications) and also in multimode systems.

Common Connector Types

The most frequently used pigtails in fiber optic transceivers include: LC (Lucent Connector): Small form factor, duplex-friendly, widely used in data centers and high-density applications.

L

C connectors have a 1. 25mm ferrule and are compact, making them ideal for modern transceivers.

S

C (Subscriber Connector): Square connector with a 2. 5mm ferrule, push-pull design, commonly used in telecom and FTTH networks.

F

C (Ferrule Connector): Screw-type metallic connector, providing secure connections, often used in lab or industrial applications.

S

T (Straight Tip): Bayonet-style connector, older networks, sometimes used in industrial or legacy systems.

M

U (Miniature Unit): Compact duplex connector, less common but used in high-density applications. E2000: High-performance connector with dust cap, used in premium telecom and WDM networks. MPO/MTP: Multi-fiber connectors for high-density or parallel optics applications, often in data centers.

Polish Types

Connector ferrules are polished to reduce return loss and improve signal quality: UPC (Ultra Physical Contact): Flat polish, return loss ~50 dB, common in data centers and enterprise links.

AP

C (Angled Physical Contact): 8° angled polish, return loss -60 dB or better, essential for FTTH, CATV, WDM, and 5G networks.

Specialized Pigtails

Armored Pigtails: Encased in stainless steel or metal for protection against crushing, rodents, or construction damage, suitable for industrial or outdoor environments. Waterproof Pigtails: Reinforced with waterproof jackets for harsh outdoor conditions, used in communication towers, CATV, and military installations.

Fiber Count and Configuration

Simplex: Single fiber with one connector, used for point-to-point connections. Duplex: Two fibers with two connectors, commonly used in transceivers for bidirectional communication. Multi-fiber: 4, 6, 8, 12, 24, or 48 fibers for high-density or data center applications.

Summary

For most modern fiber optic transceivers, LC and SC pigtails dominate, especially in single-mode networks.

F

C, ST, MU, and E2000 are used in specialized or legacy applications. Choosing the correct pigtail involves considering connector type, polish type, fiber count, and environmental protection, ensuring low insertion loss, high return loss, and reliable network performance.
