Material Requirements for Cable Connection Boxes

Cable connection boxes must be made from non-combustible, corrosion-resistant materials such as metal (stainless steel or aluminum) or durable, UV- and moisture-resistant plastics, suitable for the installation environment.

Material Types

Metal Boxes: Typically made from stainless steel or aluminum, which are corrosion-resistant and non-combustible. Suitable for metal-sheathed cables (BX), unfinished basements, or areas requiring extra mechanical protection. Must be grounded continuously using a grounding screw or approved method to ensure electrical safety.

Metal thickness should be sufficient to support internal conductors and devices without deformation. Plastic Boxes: Made from UV-resistant, impact-resistant, and flame-retardant plastics. Ideal for non-metallic sheathed cables (Romex) and indoor applications where corrosion is a concern.

Must be rated for the specific environment, including damp or wet locations if applicable. Require grounding clips if used with metallic components to maintain safety.

Environmental Considerations

Damp or wet locations: Boxes must be rated for moisture exposure and prevent water ingress. Outdoor exposure: Materials must resist UV radiation, rain, snow, and temperature fluctuations. Ingress protection (IP): Boxes should prevent dust, dirt, and other contaminants from entering and damaging internal wiring.

Compliance and SafetyNEC 314. 28 mandates non-combustible materials for junction boxes.

NE

C 314. 16 specifies minimum volume sizes to accommodate conductors safely, preventing overheating or insulation damage. Boxes must be securely fastened to the structure and flush with finished surfaces to allow proper cover installation and prevent fire spread.

Covers must fit tightly to prevent accidental contact with live wires.

High-

Voltage and Specialized BoxesFor high-voltage cable junction boxes (10kV–40. 5kV), materials are fully insulated and sealed to operate reliably in harsh conditions such as rain, snow, or sandstorms. These boxes often include: Stable support structuresCore grounding componentsWater deflectors to prevent backflowPre-embedded anchor bolts for secure installationSummaryWhen selecting a cable connection box, choose metal or plastic materials based on the type of cable, environmental exposure, and NEC compliance.

Ensure corrosion resistance, fire safety, grounding, and proper volume to maintain electrical safety and durability. For high-voltage or outdoor applications, additional insulation, sealing, and structural support are required to withstand harsh conditions.
