Manufacturing Process of Fiberglass Cable Trays

Fiberglass (FRP) cable trays are manufactured using a pultrusion process that combines continuous fiberglass reinforcements with resin to produce strong, lightweight, corrosion-resistant trays.

Raw Materials

The primary materials for FRP cable trays are fiberglass reinforcements (rovings or mats) and thermoset resins such as polyester, vinyl ester, or epoxy. The fiberglass provides mechanical strength and stiffness, while the resin acts as a binding matrix, offering resistance to chemicals, moisture, and UV radiation. Additional additives like fire retardants, UV stabilizers, and pigments can be incorporated to enhance flame resistance, weatherability, or aesthetics.

The ratio of high-quality fiberglass to resin is critical to ensure both strength and flexibility.

Pultrusion Process

The most widely used manufacturing method is pultrusion, a continuous, automated process: Fiberglass Impregnation: Continuous fiberglass strands are pulled through a resin bath to saturate the fibers with the chosen resin matrix. Shaping and Curing: The saturated fibers are pulled through a heated die, which shapes the tray into ladder, trough, or solid-bottom profiles and simultaneously cures the resin. Cutting: Once cured, the continuous pultruded profile is cut to the required lengths, often exceeding 6 meters for standardized production.

Surface Treatments: Optional treatments such as flame retardant, anti-slip, or UV-resistant coatings can be applied to meet specific environmental or safety requirements. Design and ReinforcementFRP cable trays can include internal stiffeners to enhance load-bearing capacity. The cross-sectional design is typically ladder-type, tray-type, or trough-type, with a smooth, flat surface for easy cable installation.

The design ensures structural integrity even under impact, protecting internal cables in industrial or corrosive environments.

Quality Control

Quality assurance is integral to FRP tray production. Manufacturers monitor: Resin-to-glass ratioCuring temperatureFiber alignmentDimensional accuracyMechanical properties such as tensile and flexural strengthFlame resistance and chemical corrosion resistance Compliance with standards like ASTM D635, NEMA FG 1, and IEC 61537 ensures the trays meet safety, durability, and performance requirements. Applications and AdvantagesFRP cable trays are widely used in power plants, substations, chemical plants, and coastal areas due to their corrosion resistance, insulation properties, and lightweight nature.

They maintain structural integrity under impact and harsh environmental conditions, making them ideal for industrial and outdoor applications. In summary, the fiberglass cable tray manufacturing process combines high-quality raw materials, precise pultrusion techniques, and rigorous quality control to produce durable, lightweight, and corrosion-resistant cable management solutions suitable for demanding industrial environments.
