Optical Cable Crossing Solution

Optical cables can be safely and efficiently crossed over rivers, roads, or existing cables using specialized methods such as aerial deployment, underground conduits, overhead lines, and undersea path planning.

River and Aerial Crossings

For river crossings, modern methods avoid traditional boat-based installation. One approach uses intelligent unmanned aircraft (drones) to carry a lightweight line across the river, which is then used to pull a bearing steel wire and the optical cable itself to the opposite bank. This method reduces risk, saves labor, and accelerates construction while maintaining safety in hazardous locations.

Overhead crossings typically leave 15–20 meters of slack on both sides of the river to accommodate tension and maintenance.

Underground and Road Crossings

When crossing roads or urban areas, optical cables are often installed in buried conduits at depths of 1–1. 2 meters, sometimes deeper in cold climates to prevent frost damage. Directional boring or horizontal directional drilling (HDD) is preferred to minimize surface disruption.

Conduits should extend at least 0. 5 meters beyond the road edge, and conductive marker tape is buried above the conduit for future detection. Proper planning ensures minimal interference with existing infrastructure and reduces the risk of accidental damage.

Cable Crossings and Mechanical Considerations

When optical cables cross each other, it is important to minimize mechanical pressure. Using figure-8 loops during cable pulls prevents twisting and kinking. Each loop should be slightly offset from the previous one, and the cable should be carefully handled to avoid damage to the outer sheath.

For overhead or pipeline crossings, guiding devices or protective tubes are used to prevent abrasion and maintain cable integrity.

Undersea Cable Crossings

For undersea or submarine cables, crossings must be carefully planned to intersect existing cables at angles as close to 90° as possible, with a minimum of 45° if right angles are not feasible. This ensures long-term maintainability and reduces the risk of damage from fishing, anchoring, or seabed movement. Automated route planning tools can optimize paths while considering geological hazards, bathymetry, and human activity.

Summary

Optical cable crossing methods vary depending on the environment: Rivers: Drone-assisted aerial deployment with steel wire and nylon rope.

Roads/

Urban areas: Buried conduits, directional drilling, and proper marking. Cable intersections: Figure-8 loops and protective guides to prevent mechanical stress. Undersea: Planned crossings at near-right angles with geotechnical and human activity considerations.

These methods ensure safety, reliability, and maintainability of optical fiber networks across diverse terrains and obstacles.
