Low-speed optical module principle

Low-speed optical modules convert electrical signals into optical signals and back using LEDs or laser diodes for transmission and photodetectors for reception, typically operating at 1 Gbps or lower. OverviewLow-speed optical modules are designed for data rates of 1 Gbps or below and are commonly used in legacy networks, small-scale data centers, and telecommunications systems. They primarily come in GBIC and SFP form factors, with SFP modules being more compact and suitable for high-density cabling environments.

Transmitter Section

The transmitter section performs electro-optical conversion. An incoming electrical signal is processed by an internal driver chip, which modulates a light source—either a laser diode (LD) or a light-emitting diode (LED)—to emit a corresponding optical signal. An automatic power control (APC) circuit ensures that the optical output remains stable, preventing signal degradation over the fiber link.

Receiver Section

The receiver section performs photoelectric conversion. A photodetector diode receives the incoming optical signal and converts it back into an electrical signal. This signal is then amplified by a preamplifier before being output at the module's designated data rate.

This ensures compatibility with switches, routers, and other network devices. Key ComponentsTOSA (Transmitter Optical Sub-Assembly): Contains the light source, optical interface, monitoring photodiode, and driver circuitry. Responsible for converting electrical signals into optical signals.

ROS

A (Receiver Optical Sub-Assembly): Includes the photodetector and preamplifier, converting optical signals back into electrical form. Driver and Control Circuits: Manage signal modulation, power control, and interface with the host device. ApplicationsLow-speed optical modules are widely used in Gigabit Ethernet, legacy network systems, and short-distance fiber links.

While GBI

C modules are mostly found in older equipment, SFP modules dominate modern deployments due to their smaller size, hot-swappable design, and flexibility.

Summary

In essence, a low-speed optical module functions as a bridge between electrical and optical domains, using LEDs or laser diodes for transmission and photodetectors for reception. Its design ensures reliable data transfer at lower speeds, making it suitable for legacy systems and cost-sensitive applications.
