Characteristics of Relay Protection Layout Diagram

Relay protection ensures the safety of electrical systems by detecting abnormal conditions and isolating faults using various types of relays, represented through AC, DC, and logic schematics.

Types of Protective Relays

Overcurrent Relay (OCR) Operates when current exceeds a preset value. It can be instantaneous or time-delayed, providing tripping signals to circuit breakers to prevent damage from overloads or short circuits. Differential Relay (DR) Protects a specific zone by comparing input and output currents.

If a fault occurs within the zone, the relay detects the difference and trips the breaker. Restricted Earth Fault Relay (REF) Highly sensitive relay (2–8%) used for detecting ground faults in a restricted zone, typically in transformers. Overvoltage and Undervoltage Relays Monitor voltage levels.

Overvoltage relays trip when voltage exceeds a preset limit, while undervoltage relays trip when voltage drops below a threshold. Reverse Power Relay Prevents power from flowing in the wrong direction, such as from a generator to the grid, which could cause the generator to run as a motor. Master Relay and Trip Circuit Supervision Relay Master relays consolidate multiple protection signals and send a single trip command to the breaker.

Trip circuit supervision relays monitor the health of the breaker trip circuit and provide alarms if faults are detected. Schematic DiagramsAC SchematicsAlso called AC Elementary Diagrams or Three-Line Diagrams. Show all three phases of the primary system individually, including transformers, circuit breakers, and bushings.

Include equipment ratings, terminal numbers, and detailed connections for protective relays and metering equipment.

DC Schematics

Represent the logic of control and protection circuits. Include switches, contacts, time-delay relays, push buttons, limit switches, and controlled devices like motor starters. Facilitate tracing of measuring and control circuits without regard to physical layout.

Functional and Logic Diagrams

Show the relationship between relays, breakers, and control devices. Emphasize function over physical arrangement, making it easier to understand system operation and perform functional testing.

Example Representation

Overcurrent Relay Wiring: Shows current transformer connections to the relay, relay contacts, and trip coil of the breaker. Differential Relay Diagram: Illustrates input and output current paths, relay coil, and tripping mechanism. Trip Circuit Supervision: Displays monitoring contacts, alarm outputs, and breaker trip coil interface.

Summary

Protective relays are essential for detecting faults, isolating faulty sections, and ensuring system stability. Their types include overcurrent, differential, earth fault, voltage-based, and reverse power relays. Schematics—AC, DC, and logic diagrams—provide a graphical representation of connections and functional relationships, aiding in installation, testing, and maintenance of protection systems.
