Multimode fiber optic transceivers are categorized by model

Multimode fiber optic transceivers are categorized by fiber type (OM1–OM5), operating wavelength, data rate, and form factor such as SFP, SFP+, and QSFP.

Fiber Type Classification

Multimode fiber (MMF) transceivers are designed to match specific multimode fiber types, which are standardized as OM1, OM2, OM3, OM4, and OM5. These fiber types differ in core diameter, modal bandwidth, maximum distance, and typical applications: OM1: 62. 5 µm core, LED source, orange jacket, suitable for 1G links up to 275 m.

OM2: 50 µm core, LED source, supports 1G–10G up to 550 m. OM3: 50 µm core, laser-optimized (VCSEL), supports 10G–40G up to 300 m. OM4: 50 µm core, laser-optimized, supports 10G–100G up to 550 m.

OM5: 50 µm core, wideband multimode, supports high-speed aggregated links (40G/100G) up to 1000 m.

Operating Wavelength

Multimode transceivers typically operate at 850 nm using VCSELs for short-range links. Some specialized multimode modules can operate at 1310 nm for extended reach, while 1550 nm variants are rare. The wavelength must match the fiber type to ensure optimal performance.

Form Factor and Data Rate

Transceivers are also categorized by form factor, which determines their size, compatibility, and data rate: SFP (Small Form-factor Pluggable): Up to 1 Gbps, commonly used in enterprise networks. SFP+: Enhanced SFP, supports up to 10 Gbps, backward compatible with SFP.

QSF

P (Quad Small Form-factor Pluggable): Supports 40 Gbps, often used in data center distribution layers.

Key Considerations

When selecting a multimode transceiver, consider: Fiber type compatibility (OM1–OM5) to match core size and modal bandwidth. Distance requirements: OM3/OM4/OM5 are preferred for high-speed short-range links. Wavelength: 850 nm for standard VCSEL-based multimode transceivers.

Form factor and data rate: SFP, SFP+, QSFP depending on network speed and density. By understanding these categories, network designers can choose transceivers that optimize performance, cost, and compatibility for short-range multimode fiber applications in data centers and enterprise networks.
