Principle of Telescopic Fiber Optic Sensor

A telescopic fiber optic sensor detects displacement, position, or dimensional changes by transmitting light through an optical fiber, with the telescopic mechanism allowing precise measurement over extended ranges.

How It Works

A telescopic fiber optic sensor combines the principles of fiber optic sensing with a mechanical telescopic structure. The optical fiber acts as the sensing element, transmitting light from a source to a detector. Changes in the position or displacement of the telescopic probe modulate the light signal, either by altering its intensity, phase, or wavelength, which is then measured by the detector to determine the physical change (position, distance, or vibration) accurately.

The telescopic design allows the sensor to extend into hard-to-reach or confined spaces, making it ideal for applications where direct contact measurement is difficult. As the telescopic arm moves, the optical fiber inside either bends, stretches, or interacts with a reflective surface, causing measurable changes in the light signal.

Key Functions

Displacement Measurement: The sensor can detect linear or angular displacement by monitoring changes in light intensity or phase as the telescopic probe moves. Position Sensing: It provides precise positional feedback in machinery, robotics, or structural monitoring. Remote Sensing: The fiber optic element allows measurements in environments with high voltage, electromagnetic interference, or extreme temperatures, where traditional electrical sensors cannot operate safely.

High Precision and Sensitivity: By using interferometric or fiber Bragg grating techniques, telescopic fiber optic sensors can detect micrometer-level changes in position or strain.

Applications

Telescopic fiber optic sensors are widely used in: Industrial automation for monitoring machine components and alignment. Aerospace and automotive for precise displacement and vibration measurements. Structural health monitoring in bridges, pipelines, and confined spaces.

High-temperature or hazardous environments where electrical sensors are unsafe. In summary, a telescopic fiber optic sensor functions by converting mechanical movement into optical signals, with the telescopic mechanism enabling access to extended or confined areas while maintaining high precision and immunity to harsh environmental conditions.
