Laying optical cables within the bureau

Proper indoor optical cable installation ensures network reliability, prevents fiber damage, and maintains long-term performance.

Cable Handling and Preparation

When installing optical fiber cables indoors, handle the cable carefully to avoid kinks, sharp bends, or mechanical stress. Keep protective materials on the cable until installation, and avoid pulling over edges or sharp surfaces to prevent sheath damage and fiber attenuation increases. Use figure-8 loops when laying cable temporarily on the floor to prevent twisting, and ensure each loop is slightly offset from the previous one.

Bend Radius and Pulling Tension

Maintain the minimum bend radius specified by the manufacturer. For loose tube or ribbon cables, this is typically 20 times the cable diameter during installation and 10 times during static conditions. Exceeding this radius can deform the cable core and damage fibers.

Do not exceed the maximum pulling tension, and use proper cable grips and swivels to prevent twisting during pulls.

Routing and Support

Route cables using cable trays, racks, or conduits to prevent crushing or pinching. Maintain separation from power cables to avoid interference and comply with safety standards. For vertical risers, use intermediate support points and ensure the cable weight does not exceed the long-term operating load.

Begin installation from the top of the rack or riser to simplify pulling and reduce stress on the cable.

Connector and Patch Cord Management

Clean and inspect all connectors before making connections. Even small dust or residue can cause signal loss or damage the connector surface. Use dry or wet-dry cleaning methods with high-purity isopropyl alcohol and lint-free wipes.

Pre-terminated cables can simplify installation but may require coiling excess cable neatly within the route.

Grounding and Safety

For armored or metallic cables, ensure proper bonding and grounding according to local codes and manufacturer recommendations. This protects against electrical faults, reduces interference, and prevents damage during power surges.

Environmental Considerations

Indoor cables should comply with fire safety standards, such as LSZH or plenum-rated sheaths, especially in risers or areas with positive air pressure. Avoid storing or installing cables in areas with sharp objects, excessive heat, or moisture. By following these best practices, optical fiber cables within a bureau can be installed safely, maintain signal integrity, and support long-term network performance.
