Optical Receiver Optical Transceiver

An optical receiver is not the same as an optical transceiver; a receiver only converts incoming light into electrical signals, while a transceiver combines both transmitting and receiving functions in a single device.

Optical Receiver

An optical receiver is a device that captures incoming optical signals from a fiber optic cable and converts them back into electrical signals suitable for digital processing. It typically uses a photodetector, such as a PIN diode or avalanche photodiode (APD), to generate a current proportional to the received light. This current is then amplified and processed through a transimpedance amplifier (TIA) and additional circuitry to reconstruct the original data stream.

The receiver's performance, including sensitivity, noise figure, and bandwidth, determines the practical reach and reliability of the fiber link.

Optical Transceiver

An optical transceiver is a modular device that integrates both an optical transmitter and an optical receiver into a single unit. It can send electrical signals as light over fiber optic cables and simultaneously receive light signals and convert them back to electrical signals. Transceivers are commonly used in network equipment like switches, routers, and servers, enabling full-duplex communication over a single port.

They include electronic components to encode/decode data, control the light source (e.g., VCSEL, FP, DFB lasers), and detect incoming light using photodiodes.
