Leather fiber tail fiber end

A leather fiber tail fiber end is the prepared end of a fiber optic cable within a leather (outdoor or self-supporting) cable, typically terminated for connection via fusion splicing or connectors.

Structure of Leather Fiber Cables

Leather cables, often used in outdoor or FTTH (Fiber to the Home) applications, have a central optical fiber surrounded by reinforcing elements such as steel wires or non-metallic strengthening cores. Some designs, like butterfly cables, feature a flat, lightweight structure with fibers in the middle and reinforcement on the sides, providing good bending resistance and ease of installation. These cables can be single-core or multi-core, depending on the application.

Tail Fiber Definition

A tail fiber (or fiber optic patch cord) has a connector on one end and a cut or prepared fiber end on the other. The unconnected end is typically spliced to another fiber within a termination box or distribution frame. Tail fibers are classified into single-mode and multimode types, distinguished by color, wavelength, and transmission distance.

Single-mode tail fibers are usually yellow and operate at 1310nm or 1550nm, with distances up to 40 km, while multimode fibers are orange, operate at 850nm, and cover shorter distances around 500 m.

Preparing the Fiber End

Proper preparation of the fiber end is crucial for minimizing signal loss and ensuring reliable connections. Common methods include: Cleaving: Controlled breaking of the fiber to produce a flat, smooth end perpendicular to the fiber axis. This can be done manually with a diamond blade or using a precision fiber cleaver for consistent results.

Polishing: For high-quality connections, the fiber end may be polished within a ferrule using specialized machines. Polished ends can have a slight convex curvature to improve physical contact in connectors. Inspection: Fiber endfaces are inspected using microscopes or interferometric analyzers to ensure smoothness and proper alignment, which directly affects insertion loss and return loss.

Connection Methods

Tail fibers are connected to other fibers using: Fusion Splicing: Permanent joining of two fiber ends by melting them together, providing low-loss and durable connections. Cold Connection (Mechanical Splicing): Uses a V-groove and matching liquid to align fibers physically. This method is faster but has higher insertion loss and shorter service life compared to fusion splicing.

Applications

Leather fiber tail fibers are widely used in: Indoor and outdoor FTTH installationsFiber optic termination boxesConnecting optical transceivers, couplers, and jumpers Proper selection of fiber type, end preparation, and connection method ensures optimal performance and longevity of the fiber optic network.

Considerations for Optical Fiber Termination

To terminate an optical fiber cable in the field, the fiber (either tight-buffered or loose fan-out tube) is simply stripped, cleaved, inserted into the connector and mechanically secured.

Fiber cable termination

Fiber Optic cable termination is the addition of connectors to each optical fiber in a cable. The fibers need to have connectors fitted before they can attach to other equipment.
