Connection of Drop Cable to Splitter

To connect a fiber optic drop cable to a splitter, the cable is typically spliced or terminated with connectors and then plugged into the splitter adapters inside a splice closure. Overview of the Connection ProcessIn an FTTH network, the drop cable runs from the optical distribution network (ODN) to the subscriber's ONT. The connection to the splitter, usually located in an optical distribution box or splice closure, can be achieved using either fusion/mechanical splicing or pre-terminated connectors (SC/APC is preferred for CATV services).

Step-by-

Step Connection

Prepare the Drop CableStrip the outer jacket and buffer to expose the fiber. Clean the fiber to remove any debris or coating residues. If using a pre-terminated cable, ensure the SC/APC or LC connector is intact and clean.

Install the Splice Closure

Open the closure and secure it to the mounting point (aerial or wall-mounted). Route the main feeder cable and drop cables through the designated entry points. Use mechanical clamps or spiral tubes to protect the fibers and maintain proper bend radius.

Splice or Connect to the SplitterFor fusion splicing, align the drop fiber with a pigtail from the splitter and perform the splice using a fusion splicer. Protect the splice with a heat-shrink tube. For connectorized drop cables, plug the SC/APC connectors directly into the splitter adapters.

Ensure the connectors are fully seated and oriented correctly to avoid signal reflection.

Manage Fiber Slack and Routing

Coil any excess fiber in the splice tray without exceeding the minimum bend radius. Secure fibers with perforated banding or clips to prevent movement and stress.

Close and Seal the Splice Closure

Replace the closure covers and seal all entry points to protect against moisture and environmental damage. Verify that all connections are secure and test the optical signal to ensure minimal loss.

Best Practices

Maintain a minimum bend radius of 20 times the cable diameter during installation and 10 times for static placement. Use UV-resistant outdoor-rated drop cables if exposed to sunlight. Prefer SC/APC connectors to reduce reflection, especially when CATV services are included.

Avoid excessive pulling tension; typically, 80–100 N is recommended for manual installation. By following these steps, the drop cable can be reliably connected to the splitter, ensuring efficient signal distribution to subscribers while protecting the fiber from mechanical stress and environmental factors.
