Wiring Method for Frequency Converter and Distribution Box

Proper wiring of a frequency converter distribution box requires careful connection of the main power circuit, control circuit, and grounding, while observing safety and electromagnetic interference precautions.

Main Circuit Wiring

Power Supply Connection

For three-phase converters, connect the input to R, S, T terminals with 380V AC. For single-phase converters, connect the input to L and N terminals with 220V AC. The output terminals U, V, W must connect directly to the motor; do not connect the input to the output or use contactors in series, as this can cause motor malfunction or inverter damage.

Protection Devices

Install an air switch in series with the input for protection. Avoid using a leakage protection switch due to the high leakage current of frequency converters.

Brake Resistor Terminal

Only connect the recommended brake resistor to the +PR terminal; do not short-circuit or connect other devices. Control Circuit WiringStart-Stop LogicUse external I/O terminals for start-stop control via self-locking buttons, PLC outputs, or relay contacts. Alternatively, the RUN and STOP buttons on the converter panel can be used, or control can be implemented via a host computer using communication protocols.

Frequency Command Input

Connect a 1–10K potentiometer for analog frequency control: One end to +10V referenceOther end to GNDWiper (middle terminal) to AI1/AVI analog inputThis allows the converter to receive a 0–10V signal, translating to a frequency range (e.g., 0–50Hz) for motor speed control. Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) MitigationKeep control lines at least 100mm away from power cables. Use cable sleeves on output cables and consider installing line noise filters to reduce interference with nearby equipment.

Grounding

Ensure the ground terminal of the frequency converter is properly connected to the distribution box ground. Proper grounding reduces electrical noise and protects against faults.

Additional Precautions

Remove any loose wire strands to prevent short circuits. Keep the inverter clean; avoid debris entering the unit during installation. When wiring over long distances, consider the effect of parasitic capacitance, which may reduce current limiting response and cause malfunctions.

Frequency Meter Integration

If a frequency meter is installed in the distribution box, connect it in parallel to the power supply. For single-phase meters, connect L and N; for three-phase meters, connect U, V, W or at least two phases depending on the meter type. By following these steps, the frequency converter distribution box will be safely and effectively wired, ensuring reliable motor control and minimizing interference with other equipment.
