Inter optical module

An optical module is a hot-pluggable transceiver that converts electrical signals to optical signals for high-speed data communication, with emerging technologies like LPO, NPO, and CPO enhancing bandwidth and energy efficiency.

Overview of Optical Modules

Optical modules are hot-pluggable transceivers used in high-bandwidth data communications. They have an electrical interface connecting to the system and an optical interface connecting to fiber optic cables. Modules can plug into front-panel or on-board sockets, and their form factors are often standardized through multi-source agreements (MSAs).

Early modules used analog NRZ interfaces, while modern modules employ retimed digital interfaces defined by standards like the Common Electrical Interface (CEI) and IEEE 802. 3 Ethernet specifications.

Applications

Optical modules are widely used in datacenters, AI workloads, and high-performance computing (HPC), where data movement between processing units (xPUs) is a bottleneck. They provide higher bandwidth, longer reach, and lower latency compared to traditional electrical interconnects. Modules are also used in defense, aerospace, and industrial systems, with ruggedized designs supporting extreme temperatures and high reliability.

Emerging Optical Interconnect Technologies

To overcome limitations of traditional pluggable optics, the industry is exploring: Linear-drive Pluggable Optics (LPO): Removes DSPs and clock data recovery circuits, using high-linearity drivers and transimpedance amplifiers. This reduces power consumption by 30–50% and lowers latency, but requires precise analog signal processing on the host xPU.

Near-

Package Optics (NPO): Integrates optics closer to the processing unit, balancing performance and integration complexity.

Co-

Packaged Optics (CPO): Places optical modules on the same substrate as the xPU, achieving energy efficiency as low as 5 pJ/bit and reducing latency. Future approaches may involve 3D wafer-scale photonic interposers for massive parallel optical channels.

Technical Features

Modern optical modules can support multi-channel high-speed data, such as 28 Gbps per channel, with ultra-low bit error rates. They are compatible with standards like VITA 66. 5, 66.

4, and 67. 3, and can be integrated into FMC boards for FPGA-based systems, providing up to 120 Gbps full-duplex throughput. Modules may combine optical and RF coaxial connectors for versatile interconnect solutions.

Future Directions

Research programs focus on silicon photonics, heterogeneous integration, and advanced 3D assembly to enable next-generation optical interconnects. These efforts aim to reduce power, increase bandwidth density, and integrate optics closer to processing units, supporting AI, HPC, and ultra-large-scale computing platforms. In summary, optical modules are essential for high-speed, low-latency data transfer, and emerging technologies like LPO, NPO, and CPO are shaping the future of energy-efficient, high-bandwidth optical interconnects.
