How to neatly coil melt fiber

Coiling melt fiber involves carefully splicing, protecting, and coiling optical fibers to prevent breakage and maintain signal quality.

Preparing and Melting the Fiber

Strip and Clean the Fiber: Use a fiber stripper to remove the outer coating and expose the glass core. Clean the fiber with alcohol wipes to remove dust or debris, ensuring a smooth end face for splicing. Cleaving: Use a fiber cleaver to create a flat, perpendicular end on the fiber.

Proper cleaving is critical for a strong fusion splice. Fusion Splicing: Insert the fiber into a fusion splicer, which melts the fiber ends together using heat. This creates a strong, low-loss connection.

Coiling the Fiber

Use Fiber Protection Sleeves: After splicing, slide a heat-shrink or protective sleeve over the joint to protect it from mechanical stress. Plan the Layout: Route fibers in the splice tray carefully. Internal pigtails are typically routed counterclockwise, while external fibers are routed clockwise.

Avoid pulling fibers tightly; let them follow their natural curve. Maintain Proper Bending Radius: Ensure the bending radius is at least ten times the fiber diameter and not less than 30mm to prevent breakage or signal loss. Coiling Method: Coil fibers one by one after splicing.

Start from the middle and then coil both sides, or start from one end and coil sequentially. Adjust the placement according to the reserved tray space and fiber length. Secure the Fiber: Use adhesive cable tie seats or clips to fix the coiled fiber in place.

Avoid overtightening, which can damage the fiber.

Best Practices

Avoid “bird's-nest” coiling; fibers should be neat and organized for future maintenance. Calculate the reserved fiber length before splicing to ensure even coiling and minimize additional loss. Handle fibers gently; optical fibers are fragile and excessive bending or pulling can cause breakage.

Replace worn fusion splicer electrodes and ensure fiber end faces are clean to maintain high-quality splices. By following these steps, you can successfully melt, splice, and coil optical fibers in a way that preserves signal integrity, prevents mechanical damage, and allows for easy maintenance in the future.
