PON Optical Power Meter Testing Principle

PON optical power meters measure optical signal levels in live passive optical networks using wavelength-specific photodetectors calibrated to telecom wavelengths, converting light into electrical signals for accurate power readings.

Principle of Measurement

A PO

N optical power meter operates by detecting light from the fiber and converting it into an electrical current using a photodiode, typically Indium-Gallium-Arsenide (InGaAs) for telecom wavelengths (800–1600 nm) or Germanium/Silicon for other ranges. The photodiode generates a current proportional to the incident optical power. This current is then processed through a calibration curve to provide a reading in dBm, representing the optical power level.

The measurement is traceable to NIST standards, ensuring consistency across different meters.

Wavelength-

Specific MeasurementPON networks use wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) to transmit upstream and downstream signals on a single fiber, typically at 1310 nm (upstream), 1490 nm (downstream), and 1550 nm (broadcast video or additional services).

A PO

N power meter is selective, meaning it measures only these specific wavelengths, unlike conventional meters that require manual wavelength selection. This allows technicians to simultaneously monitor multiple PON signals without disrupting live traffic.

Calibration and Accuracy

The meter is pre-calibrated at standard PON wavelengths to account for the varying sensitivity of the photodiode across the spectrum. Proper calibration ensures that the measured optical power reflects the actual signal strength at the optical line terminal (OLT) or optical network terminal (ONT). Accuracy depends on clean connectors, correct wavelength selection, and proper calibration.

Testing ApplicationsPON optical power meters are used to: Verify transmitter output power at OLTs and ONTs to ensure they are within manufacturer specifications. Measure fiber attenuation and continuity by connecting a calibrated light source at one end and the meter at the other. Monitor live PON networks without interrupting service, using internal pass-through to measure all three wavelengths simultaneously.

Store and compare readings for network maintenance and troubleshooting, often with threshold alarms for low or high power levels.

Safety Considerations

Technicians must never look directly into fiber connectors due to high-intensity invisible laser light, and must keep connectors clean to avoid measurement errors caused by insertion loss. In summary, a PON optical power meter works by converting light at specific PON wavelengths into electrical signals, applying calibration to provide accurate power readings, and enabling non-intrusive testing of live PON networks for installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting purposes.
