Replace the beam splitter

Replacing a beam splitter requires careful handling, proper alignment, and attention to the type of splitter and its mounting to maintain optical performance.

Identify the Type of Beam Splitter

Before replacement, determine whether your beam splitter is a plate, cube, or polarizing type. Plate beam splitters are thin glass plates often mounted at a 45° angle, while cube beam splitters consist of two prisms cemented together. Polarizing beam splitters separate light by polarization, and dichroic splitters separate by wavelength.

Knowing the type ensures you select a compatible replacement and handle it correctly. Handle with CareBeam splitters are delicate and often coated with thin films. Always wear gloves or use lint-free tweezers to avoid fingerprints or scratches on the optical surfaces.

Avoid touching the coated surfaces directly, as even minor contamination can affect reflection/transmission ratios or polarization performance.

Remove the Old Beam Splitter

Power down and block the beam to prevent exposure to laser light. Loosen the mount screws carefully, ensuring the optic does not fall or shift abruptly. For cube splitters, note the orientation of the coated prism surface, as light should typically enter the coated side to avoid damaging the cement.

For plate splitters, note the wedge orientation if present, which helps reduce ghost reflections.

Install the New Beam Splitter

Place the new splitter in the mount, ensuring it is secure and properly oriented. For plate splitters, maintain the correct angle of incidence (usually 45°) and wedge orientation if applicable. For cube splitters, ensure the coated prism faces the incoming beam to prevent damage and maintain the intended splitting ratio.

Use mounts designed for beam splitters, such as top-adjust or gimbal mounts, which allow precise tip/tilt adjustments without obstructing the beam path.

Align and Test

After installation, carefully realign the optical path. Check that the reflected and transmitted beams follow the intended paths. Verify the splitting ratio, polarization, or wavelength separation as required by your application.

If using a high-sensitivity setup, consider adding a compensation plate to match optical path lengths and reduce ghost reflections.

Additional Tips

Keep a clean workspace to prevent dust contamination. Avoid excessive torque on mount screws to prevent stress on the optic. Document the orientation and mounting of the old splitter for reference during future replacements.

If the splitter is part of a laser system, always follow laser safety protocols during replacement. By following these steps, you can replace a beam splitter safely while maintaining the optical performance of your system.

In its most common form, a cube, a beam splitter is made from two triangular glass prisms which are glued together at their base using polyester, epoxy, or urethane-based adhesives. (Before these synthetic resins, natural ones were used, e.g. Canada balsam.) The thickness of the resin layer is adjusted such that (for a certain wavelength) half of the light incident through one "port" (i.e., face of the cube) is reflected and th

What are Beamsplitters?

Dichroic Beamsplitters split light by wavelength. Options range from laser beam combiners designed for specific laser wavelengths to broadband hot and cold mirrors for splitting visible and infrared light.

How Beam Splitters Work

A beam splitter is capable of introducing phase shifts and quantum superpositions, making them a core component of Quantum Key Distribution (QKD).

The beam-splitter directs a second beam of light to the sample where it is reflected. The two beams of light return to the beam-splitter and are combined forming an image of the measured surface
