How to set up an optical fiber fusion splicer

Fusion splicing permanently joins two optical fibers by precisely aligning and melting their cores, creating a low-loss, continuous glass path. Step 1: Fiber PreparationBefore splicing, the protective coating of each fiber must be stripped to expose the bare glass cladding, typically 10–20 mm in length depending on the splicer specifications. Use a precision fiber stripper to avoid microfractures or damage to the core.

After stripping, the fiber ends must be thoroughly cleaned with lint-free wipes and 99%+ isopropyl alcohol, moving from the coating edge to the cleave tip in a single stroke to remove dust, oil, or other contaminants. In dusty or humid environments, cover the cleaned fiber with a protective boot until splicing. Step 2: Fiber CleavingA precision cleaver cuts the fiber at a sharp, clean angle, usually less than one degree.

A proper cleave ensures minimal air gaps and misalignment, which directly affects splice loss. Consistent cleaving is critical for single-mode fibers, which have thinner cores and are more sensitive to imperfections. Step 3: Fiber AlignmentThe prepared fibers are placed into the splicer's V-grooves or fiber holders.

Modern fusion splicers use active core alignment, which can include optical core alignment or LID (Local Injection and Detection) alignment. Optical core alignment uses cameras to detect the fiber cores from multiple angles and automatically adjusts the fiber positions using movable stages.

LI

D alignment measures light transmission through the fibers while adjusting their positions to achieve optimal coupling. Both methods ensure precise core-to-core alignment, minimizing splice loss. Step 4: Fusion SplicingOnce aligned, the splicer applies a controlled electric arc to melt the fiber ends, fusing them into a continuous glass strand.

The splicer software often estimates splice loss after the fusion, typically achieving 0. 05–0. 15 dB, with high-quality splices sometimes below 0.

05 dB. Step 5: Splice ProtectionAfter fusion, the exposed joint is protected using a heat-shrink sleeve, often reinforced with a strength member. Heating the sleeve creates a sealed barrier that protects the splice from moisture, physical stress, and environmental hazards.

This ensures long-term durability and mechanical stability.

Best Practices

Use anti-static wrist straps or mats to prevent static electricity from affecting the splicer electronics. Regularly inspect and clean electrodes and tools to maintain consistent splice quality. Re-clean fiber ends periodically during extended splicing sessions to maintain low-loss performance.

Handle fibers gently to avoid bending or twisting, which can introduce microfractures.

Applications

Fusion splicing is widely used in telecommunications, FTTH networks, undersea cables, data centers, medical imaging, and aerospace systems due to its low insertion loss, high strength, and long-term reliability. It is preferred over mechanical splicing for projects requiring high performance and durability. By following these steps and best practices, technicians can achieve precise, low-loss, and durable fiber optic connections suitable for high-performance networks.
