Power Supply Diagram of Main Distribution Box

The main power supply in a distribution box is connected to a main switch (MCB or MCCB), then routed through protective devices like RCDs/RCCBs, and finally distributed to individual circuit breakers for sub-circuits.

Overview of Components

Main MC

B (Double Pole): Acts as the main isolator and receives the incoming phase and neutral from the utility meter. Typically rated 63A for domestic installations in single-phase systems. RCCB/RCD (Residual Current Device): Provides protection against leakage currents, electrical shocks, and insulation faults.

Usually rated 30mA for domestic use.

Single-

Pole MC

Bs: Protect individual sub-circuits such as lighting, fans, and sockets. Ratings vary (10A, 16A, 20A) depending on load. Neutral Link: Distributes neutral to all outgoing circuits.

Earth Link: Connects all protective earth wires to the grounding electrode for safety.

Wiring Flow

Incoming Supply: The phase (live) and neutral wires from the energy meter enter the distribution box.

Main MC

B Connection: The incoming wires are connected to the main double-pole MCB. Switching off this MCB isolates the entire distribution box. RCCB/RCD Connection: The output of the main MCB feeds the input of the RCCB.

The RCC

B output then supplies the busbars for the sub-circuits.

Sub-

Circuit Distribution: Single-pole MCBs are connected to the busbars.

Each MC

B feeds a specific load, with the neutral connected to the neutral link and the earth connected to the earth link.

Single-

Phase Wiring Example

Phase (Live): Red or black wire from meter → Main MCB → RCCB → Busbar → Single-pole MCBs → Load. Neutral: Black or white wire from meter → Main MCB → RCCB → Neutral link → Load. Earth: Green or bare wire → Earth link → Load grounding terminals.

Safety and Standards

Ensure all metal enclosures are properly grounded.

Use MC

Bs and RCCBs rated according to load and local electrical codes. Follow color coding standards (IEC or NEC) for live, neutral, and earth wires. Avoid overloading circuits; distribute high-power appliances on separate MCBs.

This configuration ensures safe, organized, and efficient distribution of electricity from the main supply to all connected loads in a building, while providing protection against overloads, short circuits, and leakage currents.
