Fiber optic sensor long strip shape

Long-strip fiber optic sensors enable continuous, real-time monitoring of strain, shape, and other parameters along the entire length of the fiber.

Overview

Fiber optic sensors in a long strip or distributed format are designed to measure physical changes along the entire length of an optical fiber rather than at a single point. These sensors typically consist of a multi-core optical fiber with embedded gratings or sensing points, connected to an interrogator that collects and processes light signals to detect changes in strain, temperature, curvature, or deflection. Unlike conventional point sensors, long-strip fibers provide spatially continuous measurements, making them ideal for monitoring large structures or complex shapes.

Types and Sensing Methods

Distributed Fiber Optic Sensors (DFOS): These sensors measure strain or temperature continuously along the fiber. They can monitor thousands of points simultaneously, providing high-resolution data for structural health monitoring, industrial machinery, or civil engineering applications. Fiber Optic Shape Sensing: Using multi-core fibers with draw tower gratings (MCF-DTG®), these sensors detect curvature and 3D shape in real time.

They are widely used in robotics, minimally invasive surgery, and catheter navigation, where precise position tracking and bending detection are critical. The system calculates local curvature by measuring relative strain in the fiber cores and compensating for temperature effects.

Reflective and Thru-

Beam Fiber Sensors: These are more traditional fiber optic sensors used for object detection, liquid level monitoring, or high-precision industrial applications. They can be manufactured in thin, rectangular, or U-shaped fibers to fit narrow spaces while maintaining high accuracy.

Applications

Biomedical: Catheter navigation, surgical instrument tracking, and minimally invasive procedures. Industrial: Structural health monitoring of bridges, pipelines, and machinery; strain and deformation detection. Robotics: Real-time shape and position sensing for robotic arms and manipulators.

Harsh Environments: Long-strip fibers are suitable for tight spaces, high temperatures, or chemically aggressive environments due to the absence of electronics in the sensing head.

Advantages

Continuous Monitoring: Provides data along the entire fiber length rather than discrete points. High Resolution: Can detect minute changes in strain, curvature, or temperature. Flexibility: Can be shaped or routed through complex geometries.

Durability: Resistant to electromagnetic interference and suitable for harsh environments. Long-strip fiber optic sensors are increasingly used in applications requiring precise, real-time, and distributed measurements, offering a combination of flexibility, high resolution, and robustness that traditional sensors cannot match.
