Connection wires of the third-level distribution box

In a third-level distribution box, connect the three-phase input to the main MCCB, distribute phases to MCBs, and properly link neutral and earth to their respective busbars for safe and balanced power distribution.

Overview

A third-level distribution box, often a sub-distribution board in multi-story buildings, receives power from a higher-level distribution board and distributes it to various circuits within a specific floor or section. Proper wiring ensures balanced load distribution, safety, and protection against overcurrent or short circuits.

Step-by-

Step Wire Connection

Incoming Power ConnectionConnect the three-phase lines (R, Y, B) from the upstream distribution board to the input terminals of the main MCCB in the third-level DB. If a neutral wire is present, connect it to the neutral busbar. In some setups, a 4-pole MCCB may be used to include the neutral connection directly.

Protective Devices

The MCC

B acts as the main switch and provides protection against overcurrent and short circuits. Connect the output of the MCCB to the input terminals of individual MCBs for each circuit. For three-phase loads, use 3-pole MCBs; for single-phase loads, use single-pole MCBs.

If required, an RCCB can be installed after the main MCCB to protect against earth leakage, with its output feeding the MCBs.

Busbars

Use busbars to distribute the three-phase lines from the MCCB to the MCBs. Busbars are preferred over wires for high current circuits to ensure safety and reduce voltage drop.

Neutral and Earth Connections

Connect the neutral wire from the incoming supply to the neutral busbar. If multiple neutral links exist, interconnect them to maintain continuity. Connect the earth wire from the supply or directly from the earth pit to the earth busbar.

Similarly, link all earth connections together to ensure proper grounding.

Outgoing Load Connections

Connect each load to the output terminals of the corresponding MCB. For three-phase loads, connect all three phases; for single-phase loads, connect one phase and neutral. Ensure that the neutral and earth connections are properly routed to the respective busbars for each circuit.

Safety and Verification

Use appropriately rated wires according to the load (e.g., 10 AWG or 8 AWG for typical sub-distribution circuits) and comply with local electrical codes. Secure all connections with proper terminals and tighten screws to prevent loose contacts. Label all incoming and outgoing circuits for easy identification and maintenance.

Key Considerations

Load Balancing: Distribute single-phase loads evenly across the three phases to prevent overloading a single phase. Proper Rating: Select MCCB and MCB ratings based on the total load of the circuits served by the third-level DB. Compliance: Follow local electrical standards and safety regulations to prevent hazards such as short circuits, overcurrent, or electric shock.

By following these steps, a third-level distribution box can safely and efficiently distribute power to multiple circuits while maintaining protection and balance across all phases.
