Optical-to-Electronic Network Module

An Optical-to-Electronic (O/E) Network Module converts optical signals into electrical signals for high-speed data transmission, testing, and network analysis.

Overview

An Optical-to-

Electronic (O/E) Network Module is a device that receives optical signals transmitted through fiber optics and converts them into electrical signals for further processing, measurement, or integration into electronic systems. These modules are essential in high-speed networks, optical testing, and lab environments where precise signal characterization is required.

Key Functions

Signal Conversion: Converts optical signals from single-mode or multi-mode fibers into electrical signals compatible with oscilloscopes, digitizers, or network analyzers. High Bandwidth Support: Modern O/E modules support bandwidths ranging from 12 GHz up to 60 GHz or higher, enabling testing of high-speed optical data streams such as 10G, 40G, 100G, and 400G Ethernet. Calibration and Measurement: Many modules include onboard calibration storage and SCPI command interfaces for precise, traceable measurements.

Compatibility: Designed to work with PXI, PXIe, or benchtop instruments, as well as high-performance oscilloscopes like Keysight Infiniium UXR.

Applications

Data Center Networks: O/E modules are used to monitor and troubleshoot high-speed optical links in data centers, supporting standards like Ethernet, SONET/SDH, and Fibre Channel. Optical Testing and Lab Measurement: Used in optical labs for characterizing optical transceivers, modulators, and photodetectors, including PAM4 and other advanced modulation formats. Network Analysis: Integrated into opto-electronic network analyzers (ONAs) to perform O/E, E/O, and O/O measurements across multiple wavelengths (850, 1310, 1550 nm) with high traceability.

Technical Features

Wavelength Range: Typically covers 400 nm to 1700 nm depending on the module and application. Output Connectors: BNC or SMA outputs for direct connection to measurement instruments. Power Options: Some modules support dual power sources, including battery and external supply.

Form Factor: Available in compact benchtop designs or PXIe modules for integration into automated test systems.
