Method of binding optical cables to poles

Optical cables can be attached to poles using lashed cables, figure-8 cables, or All-Dielectric Self-Supporting (ADSS) cables, depending on the application and environmental conditions.

Types of Aerial Optical Cables

Lashed Cables: These cables are attached to an existing messenger wire using lashing wires. The messenger strand is tensioned to support the cable weight and withstand environmental loads such as wind, ice, and snow. This method is common for urban and suburban areas where existing infrastructure can be leveraged.

Figure-8 Cables: These cables integrate a steel messenger wire within the cable design. The cable is supported from the messenger portion with a thin plastic web, providing strength and stability without requiring a separate support strand.

All-

Dielectric Self-

Supporting (ADSS) Cables: ADSS cables carry their own weight and do not require a messenger strand. They are reinforced with aramid yarn and are suitable for long spans or installation near power lines, making them ideal for distribution networks and utility towers.

Installation Methods

Moving Reel Method: The cable is pulled from a moving reel along the pole line, allowing continuous installation over long distances. Stationary Reel Method: The cable is fed from a stationary reel, typically used for shorter spans or when precise tension control is required. Cable Lashing: For lashed cables, a small gauge wire is used to lash the optical cable to the messenger strand.

Proper tensioning is critical to maintain safe sag and minimize stress on the cable.

Key Considerations

Pole Spacing: Typical spacing ranges from 25–40 meters in urban areas and 40–50 meters in suburban or rural areas, with adjustments for extreme environments. Tension and Sag: The messenger strand or integrated support must be tensioned to handle the cable weight plus environmental loads while keeping sag within safe limits. Safety: Installation involves working at heights and near power lines.

Personnel must use proper training, personal protective equipment, and follow safety protocols. Environmental Protection: Cable jackets, usually made of polyethylene with carbon black, protect against UV degradation and weather exposure. By selecting the appropriate cable type and installation method, optical cables can be securely and efficiently attached to poles, ensuring reliable performance and longevity in aerial deployments.
