Coupler or fiber optic adapter

A fiber optic adapter and a coupler are related but not exactly the same: an adapter primarily aligns connectors, while a coupler can split or combine optical signals.

Fiber Optic Adapter

A fiber optic adapter is a passive device used to connect and align two fiber optic connectors, ensuring that the optical cores are precisely positioned for minimal signal loss and stable transmission. Adapters can connect identical connectors (e.g., LC–LC, SC–SC) or different types (e.g., LC–SC, ST–FC), and they are commonly used in patch panels, structured cabling, and temporary testing setups. Inside the adapter, an alignment sleeve—usually ceramic or metal—holds the ferrules of the connectors in place, maintaining core-to-core alignment.

Fiber Optic Coupler

A fiber optic coupler, on the other hand, is a device that can split or combine optical signals between multiple fibers. For example, light entering one input fiber can appear at one or more output fibers, and couplers can be designed to handle different wavelengths or polarization states. Couplers are often used in applications like wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM), signal distribution, or combining multiple inputs into a single output.

Function: Adapters primarily connect and align fibers; couplers split or combine optical signals. Connector Types: Adapters can connect the same or different connector types; couplers may have multiple inputs and outputs, not limited to connector type alignment. Applications: Adapters are used for patching, testing, and linking fibers; couplers are used for signal distribution, multiplexing, or combining signals.

While the terms are sometimes used interchangeably in casual contexts, technically, all adapters align connectors, but not all couplers are simple adapters. Some adapters can function as couplers when connecting identical interfaces, but couplers have the additional capability of splitting or combining optical signals, which adapters alone do not perform.
