Where to find the broadband terminal box

The Optical Network Terminal (ONT) is typically installed at the point where fibre enters your property, often externally, but it can also be installed internally depending on your home layout.

Typical Placement

The ON

T is usually installed externally on a wall near where the fibre cable enters the property, often called the Customer Service Point (CSP) or OpenReach box in the UK, to allow easy access for testing and maintenance without entering the home. Internal installation is possible but is not the default option and may require special arrangements with the installer.

The ON

T can be located in a utility room, kitchen, or other convenient area inside the house if external placement is impractical.

Connection to Router

The ON

T connects to your router via an Ethernet cable. The router does not need to be in the same room as the ONT; a CAT5e or higher Ethernet cable can run up to 100 meters, though keeping it under 80 meters is recommended for optimal performance. This allows flexibility in placing your router in a living room or office while the ONT remains near the fibre entry point.

Installation Considerations

Power supply: Both the ONT and the router require nearby power outlets. Cable routing: Fibre cables can be run internally or externally along walls, depending on the property layout. Accessibility: External placement allows engineers to perform testing or fault diagnosis without entering the home.

Internal wiring: If your property has existing internal wiring, the ONT can sometimes use it to connect devices in different rooms.

Summary

The ON

T is the main broadband terminal box where fibre enters your home. While external installation is standard, internal placement is possible if needed.

The ON

T connects to your router via Ethernet, allowing flexible router placement, and installers typically consider practical and accessible locations for both devices.
