Fiber Optic Cold Splice Quick Connector Connection Method

A quick-connect fiber optic cold splice is a mechanical connector that enables rapid, on-site fiber termination without heat, epoxy, or polishing. OverviewQuick-connect cold splices are designed for fast, reliable fiber termination in the field. Unlike traditional fusion splicing, they do not require specialized equipment, heat, or adhesives.

Instead, they use a factory pre-polished ceramic ferrule and a mechanical alignment mechanism to join fibers quickly while maintaining stable optical performance.

How It Works

The incoming fiber is inserted into a mechanical splice structure, often featuring a V-shaped groove and clamping element. The ferrule and fiber end face are pre-polished, ensuring low insertion loss and consistent return loss. Once the fiber is secured, the wedge or clamp is removed, completing the termination in about 2–5 minutes.

No epoxy, heat, or polishing is required, which is why it is called a "cold" splice.

Supported Fiber Types

These connectors accommodate a wide range of fibers: Bare fiber900 µm buffered fiber2. 0 mm and 3. 0 mm jacketed cablesSingle-mode and multimode fibers ApplicationsQuick-connect cold splices are widely used in: FTTH and FTTx networksLAN and telecom networksEmergency repairs and field terminationsTemporary or permanent fiber links They are particularly useful in corridors, home installations, and controlled outdoor environments, where rapid deployment and minimal equipment are essential.

Advantages

Rapid installation: Termination in minutes, reducing labor costs. High optical performance: Low insertion loss (typically 0. 1–0.

3 dB) and stable return loss. Durable and corrosion-resistant: Suitable for indoor and controlled outdoor use. Versatile: Supports multiple fiber types and diameters.

No specialized tools required: Ideal for field technicians and emergency situations. SummaryQuick-connect fiber optic cold splices provide a fast, reliable, and tool-free method for terminating optical fibers. By mechanically aligning pre-polished fibers, they maintain optical performance while significantly reducing installation time, making them ideal for modern fiber network deployment and maintenance.
