Best introduces new software packages

1 April 2003

Best Software has introduced two new software packages, Best Screenproof and Best Colorproof, available from imaging solution specialists First Graphics.
Aimed at the print media industry, Best Screenproof is a new technology that enables digital inkjet printers to accurately replicate the press. The user is able to obtain colour-accurate original screen proofs on inkjet drop-on-demand printing systems based on the International Colour Consortium (ICC) industry standard.
The original screen reproduction is based on the use of one-bit files used by manufacturers of imagesetters and digital printing equipment to drive their output devices. These files are the result of the RIP process performed prior to the output, and contain the full screening information needed for films, plates or digital printing for each of the separated colours. Before starting the output on the printing system, the separated and screened colour data resulting from the RIP process is combined into one composite file. Best's colour management system relies on ICC profiles describing the colour rendering of the proofing and reference printing system to give colour-accurate screening proofs.
Based on the concept of RIP once, output many (ROOM), data that has been ripped already can be re-used without being recalculated. This applies to both the colour-accurate screening proof and to the film, plate or digital printing output. Using the same data guarantees a consistent result, independent of the output device, because performing only one RIP process eliminates any possible variations.
Any screening technology can be used as the screening information is already contained in the one-bit files.
Combined with an inkjet or laser printer, Best Colorproof provides customers with an affordable proofing system that meets the demands of most digital workflows. The software uses the international industry standard of the ICC to create colour-accurate proofs. To achieve this, Best Colorproof uses a paper profile for the local proofing device and a reference profile that defines the final output device or process.
In addition to the standard CMYK, Best Colorproof supports up to 12 spot colours in the same job. No extra treatment is needed when spot colours are required. Versions of Best Colorproof are available for all applications, from proofing with a desktop inkjet printer to producing colour accurate proofs with a laser printer.
