Engineering printer contains 'virtual computer'

1 February 2001

The HP DesignJet 800 printer, available from Grafficomp, is a professional, robust printer for architectural, engineering, construction and mechanical design, and geographical information systems. It delivers high quality line and photo quality with continuous tones, smooth transitions and a wide colour gamut. The high photo resolution is achieved using HP colour layering technology and up to 2400 dpi resolution. Many more colours per dot are available than on a standard printer as the printer layers different colour ink drops over each other to create new colours.
Line quality is optimised with lines as thin as 0,04 mm and an accuracy of ±0,2% by using miniscule drops and continuous ink flow.
Complete with a 'virtual computer' inside, the printer does all the processing work and immediately frees up the user's computer to carry on with other work. The device contains a HP-GL/2 processor, 6 GB hard disk and up to 160 MB of RAM. Connectivity is achieved via either 10/100Base-T, USB or parallel port.
The printer is well suited to work-groups of three to 10 people, with print-times as short as 60 s for A1-size prints. It is available in two sizes with a media path that is either 107 or 61 cm wide.
