Staying small enough to care

1 November 2001

When the common motto is 'Bigger is better', it is unusual to hear of a business which has taken a carefully considered decision to remain small enough to suit the individual needs of its clients. Lynn Page of Digital Design & Print Services, which is situated in Weltevreden Park, believes that her decision has paid dividends.

"About six years ago I realised that the printing industry failed to cater for ordinary people that only need small quantities of promotional material," says Page. "I started my business to fill that gap in the market, and have always kept my original aim in mind - that is to offer a design and printing service to the man in the street."
After thoroughly researching the market to find the machine, which was most suitable for her needs, Page originally purchased an Encad PRO 36" large format printer to get her operation up and running. Once her clientele and its demands grew steadily and a second large format printer became necessary, she again decided on an Encad printer - this time the NovaJet 850 60", which was supplied and installed by First Graphics, the sole South African distributor of Encad's wide range of products.
"It was not an easy decision," says Page. "I decided from the beginning that the company should stay small because I did not want to be overloaded with work and thereby lose my personal involvement with my clients."
Whilst initially the Encad PRO 36" printer was sufficient because most of Page's clients required large format prints, it has became increasingly apparent that not only did her customers need bigger, better and faster large format prints, but more and more customers need A3, A4 and A5 prints which can't be done efficiently on the relatively low resolution PRO 36".
"A bigger and faster printer became essential - but they are not cheap," comments Page. "I was wary of laying out all that money with the possibility of not getting enough work to cover my costs. But when an international company recently offered me a big contract, I threw caution to the wind and decided it was the right time to invest in another printer.
"I investigated the market and went to various shows to compare printers. And in the end I chose the NovaJet 850 60" - not only because I know and trust Encad, but because the printer enables me to offer my clients a complete and fast service - from concept to finished art - all with guaranteed optimal quality."
