Listing ECW as one of the top reasons to upgrade, Autodesk has released Autodesk CAD Overlay 2002, Autodesk Land Desktop 3, and Autodesk Map 5 with native support for ECW format wavelet-based compressed imagery. ECW offers Autodesk users the benefit of being able to work with very large image files directly within their GIS applications. Combining ECW imagery with their GIS knowledge base reduces the time and costs and improves the quality of key business decisions.

The patented ECW compression technology, is fast becoming a spatial industry standard for wavelet-based imagery compression. ECW provides up to 100:1 multiband compression at speeds up to 50% faster than its closest competitor. The ECW format also provides viewing that is 300% faster than any other wavelet-based compression format, thus adding the ability to efficiently deal with gigabyte sized image files.
