A message from Wilhelm Herbst, national chairperson of the Geo-Information Society of South Africa

1 December 2003

As a relatively young and evolving technology sector, the South African GIS industry has gone through a period of creating its own, distinctive identity, evolving into a mature sector in South Africa.
Formed in February 2000 as a representative body aiming to promote and protect the interests of the South African GIS community, the Geo-Information Society of South Africa, commonly known as GISSA has rapidly increased in size and influence. Since its formation, GISSA's activities have centred on the four regional bodies of the association, GISSA Gauteng, NAGIS (KwaZulu-Natal), FAGIS (Free State) and CAGIS (Cape Town). The Mpumalanga Province will be launching its regional society on 26 November. GISSA continually strives to further GIS development and education in South Africa. To this end GISSA is working closely with the Standards Governing Body to develop unit standards for the industry. The first qualification is almost complete and any person interested in getting involved in the project can contact me on wherbst@msq.co.za. Currently, the registration process of all involved in the GIS profession is underway. Once the announcement is made in the Government Gazette, individuals should be able to begin registration under the grandfather clause or by applying through the normal channels.
This registration process will offer those in the sector numerous benefits. Apart from offering those involved in the GIS sector recognition for their skills as in line with other industries, the registration process will also regulate the industry with a code of ethics and disciplinary processes.
If you are not yet a member of GISSA I urge you to join. Being a member not only entitles you to be part of this important part of the GIS history in South Africa, but also discounts your requirements to register under the grandfather clause.
