KZN learns benefits of GIS

iLembe District Municipality, immediately north of eThekwini Municipality on the north coast of KwaZulu-Natal, recently hosted its 2nd International GIS Day at the Sangweni Tourism Information Centre in Ballito. The district municipality covers 3260 km2 and is comprised of four local municipalities. The event was organised by Vishanth Singh, iLembe's GIS officer, and was attended by approximately 30 people.
The day's programme included:
* 'What is GIS', presented by Vishanth Singh.

* A practical demonstration using iLembe's GIS data, presented by Claudia Ringewaldt, a GIS consultant from MultiConsult Engineering.

* A review of GIMS, ESRI and an ArcGIS overview, presented by Christopher Byren - GIMS' regional manager for KwaZulu-Natal.

* A presentation by Craig Perritt of Intermap on the DIMS - district information management system - a web-based project management tool developed for municipalities.

* A poster viewing displaying some of the GIS mapping and projects by iLembe.

* A competition to identify spatial features in the municipality.

* A light lunch completed the morning.
The event successfully demonstrated to the attendants what the municipality is achieving through its GIS supplied by ESRI.
