Software watchdog offers companies two months to legalise software

1 February 2001

February 2001 sees The Business Software Alliance (BSA) launching its first ever 60-day truce campaign in an attempt to assist organisations in legalising their software. The 'Truth or Dare' campaign encourages illegal software users to get legal without fear of BSA litigation.
In South Africa, the pirated software level currently stands at 47% of all software used. According to a recent industry survey*, a reduction in South Africa's 1999 packaged software piracy rate from 47% to 25,1% would have generated in the region of 14 770 additional jobs and over R2,25 bn in additional government revenues. If an equivalent reduction in piracy is achieved by 2004, the industry could account for a total of 59 991 jobs and R12 bn in fiscal contributions.
Mark Reynolds, BSA Chairman says, "The BSA understands that some of the illegal software in use is as a result of poor systems management, rather than deliberate theft. As a result we decided to run the truce to draw attention to the free advice and practical assistance that is available. Companies should take advantage of this opportunity and protect themselves from future financial loss."
He continues, "Companies that do not have enough user licenses or that make illegal copies of software run an ever-increasing risk of prosecution. The BSA receives on average, one lead every working day on South African organisations suspected to be using software unlawfully. The damage can be huge, with defence or settlement of legal cases costing thousands. The cost to the company's reputation is potentially even greater when the case becomes public knowledge."
Organisations can register for the campaign between 1 February 2001 and 31 March 2001. The BSA encourages businesses to make use of its website at www.bsa.co.za/truth, or call the toll-free hotline at 0800 110 447 for advice, assistance and auditing tools. The Truce campaign excludes any organisation that is currently being investigated by the BSA.
