A party was held in Lusaka, Zambia, recently to celebrate the first anniversary of Kelly + Kelly ESRI Business Partners for Zambia. The company was established by the husband and wife team of Peter and Kenna Kelly to provide product, consultancy and training services in Zambia.

Kelly + Kelly were part of the core team that created the first GIS day in Zambia, held in Lusaka in November last year. A series of seminars and presentations attracted over 200 delegates from all over Zambia. The company has provided services to organisations such as the Ministry of Local Government and Housing, the Ministry of Tourism, the Ministry of Environment, and many others. Through Kelly + Kelly, ESRI products are being used on many important projects in Zambia, for example:

* Presidential/parliamentary elections: ArcInfo 8 is being used to produce accurate data on constituencies and wards in preparation for the upcoming elections.

* Urban road rehabilitation: Using PC ArcInfo and ArcView, a functional classification system for the rehabilitation of urban roads throughout the country has been developed.

* Agricultural investment: A series of thematic maps was produced indicating the most suitable areas for growing particular crops to potential agricultural investors.

* Forest degradation: ArcView is being used to map designated forest areas and develop a provincial forestry action plan for Zambia.
