Gauteng libraries to begin computer-assisted adult literacy programmes

1 February 2002

Seven different libraries in previously disadvantaged areas in Gauteng have bought software from literacy experts Media Works in order to implement computer-assisted adult literacy programmes, based at the libraries.
The libraries involved in the programme are in Alexandra, Soweto, Orange Farm and Rosettenville. The project has been paid for by Johannesburg Libraries and the idea is that local people will be trained in using the programme initially. After this, they will help fellow members of their communities, using computers at the libraries in question. The literacy programme will be free to the public. Dennis Lamberti, Technical Director at Media Works, explains: "Our software is locally developed and uses culturally-correct examples during the teaching process.
"With just a small amount of mouse training, our learners sit at the computers and engage in completing the modules on their own from the very beginning of the process. The interactive nature of the programmes helps in retaining new knowledge. A facilitator is nearby to help the learner if necessary, and the computer-assisted part of the programme is also backed up by an equivalent period of workbook exercises that helps consolidate the knowledge further," he concludes.
