Design software CEO named to Bush's council of advisors

1 April 2002

Carol Bartz, chairman and CEO of the design software company, Autodesk, has been appointed to President Bush's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology. Autodesk is one of the world's largest software companies, specialising in computer-aided design (CAD) software for manufacturing, building design and civil engineering, and in geographic information systems (GIS).
According to White House officials, the council was appointed from a select group of industry leaders who are expected to play a key role in shaping and setting the US government's high tech agenda, including issues ranging from R&D; funding to new broadband incentives.
Other appointees in the 20-plus member panel include: Michael Dell, Dell Computer Corporation; council chairman, Steve Case, AOL Time Warner Inc; Gordon Moore, chairman emeritus of Intel Corporation; Steve Burke, president of Comcast Corporation; Norman Augustine, retired chairman of Lockheed Martin Corporation; and several scientists.
Errol Ashwell, managing director of Autodesk Africa says that while Bartz' appointment to a US presidential advisory council may seem far removed from the SA design industry, it is part of the Autodesk initiative to participate in shaping US policy that will ultimately influence business in the SA technology industry.
