EDS leads CAM software market

1 August 2002

CIMdata reports that based on vendor revenues received, EDS PLM Solutions was the largest provider worldwide of NC software and related services in 2001. EDS garnered a market share of 14,3%.
They were closely followed by IBM/Dassault and PTC with market shares of 13,5% and 12,8%, respectively. Other CAM software vendors in the top 10 ranking by CIMdata were Hitachi Zosen Systems, Delcam, Cimatron, Tebis, Missler, Graphic Products, and CNC Software. The report indicates that PLM Solutions is a worldwide market as four vendors are US-based, four are European, two are from Japan, and one is Israeli.
2001 was an active year for EDS. In February, they announced the formation of the E-factory business unit to provide scalable, collaborative solutions for virtual manufacturing. In addition to the CAM program, this unit is responsible for digital manufacturing products and the manufacturing engineering information capabilities being offered as Teamcenter manufacturing. In May, EDS announced its intent to acquire and merge UGS and SDRC. The former SDRC CAM revenues, albeit relatively small, are included within the EDS estimated revenues. The CAM capabilities from the two companies are being merged into the Unigraphics NX product.
Alan Christman, CIMdata Vice President, observed, "In a very difficult year, EDS produced excellent results. CIMdata estimates that they grew their CAM revenues by over 11% and as such, they were the third most rapidly growing vendor in the industry."
As previously reported by CIMdata, 2001 was a tough year for the CAM software market. CIMdata estimates that the total worldwide CAM software and related services market, based on end user payments fell by 6,1% in 2001 from a level of $1,27 bn in 2000 to $1,19 bn in 2001. However, CIMdata is projecting a 7% increase in end user payments in 2002.
