Education policy gives design-centric faculties a break

1 December 2002

Cash strapped tertiary institutions that have to equip design technology driven faculties are getting a financial break from design technology company, Autodesk.
The company is implementing a supportive education pricing policy targeted at institutions that teach skills in architecture/building design, civil and structural engineering, and mechanical engineering. A large component of these courses is computer-aided design (CAD) and drawing. "We are giving educational institutions huge price breaks," says Errol Ashwell, managing director of Autodesk Africa.
"We are sensitive to the financial challenges facing educational institutions and negotiations with each institution are based on its budget parameters." Technikon Northern Gauteng, for example, recently enjoyed savings of R3 million on the full commercial price of 60 seats of Architectural Desktop R3.3.
Ashwell says Autodesk believes it is crucial that learners undergo computer-aided design training using the latest technology - the software that they will encounter when they enter the job market. "Institutions can then be satisfied that their skills training is relevant. It does not help learners to teach them CAD skills using software that is years out of date. The Autodesk education policy also applies to institutions that have specialist geographic information systems (GIS) programs. In addition to heavily discounted lecturer training, Autodesk also provides educational institutions with up-to-date design curricula on which lecturers can build their courses. The mechanical design curriculum is already available. The built environment and GIS curricula are currently under development."
Another development demonstrating Autodesk's commitment to the education market, is its appointment of a dedicated educational programme administrator, Lisa Rautenbach, to oversee sales to universities, technikons, technical colleges, private colleges, and high schools.
