Students introduced to digital communication

1 February 2003

Civil engineering students at Stellenbosch University recently got their first taste of digital communication from visiting lecturer, Prof Karl Beucke. A respected authority in the field of computer-aided engineering and a professor at Universität Weimar in Germany, Beucke focused on communication for technical solutions, like technical drawing and models, in construction projects.

He believes it is essential to extend the content of the current computer-aided design (CAD) courses that are an integral part of engineering degrees. "It is not enough for students to be fluent in the creation of digital designs, they also have to know how to effectively exchange the digital information." Beucke is an advocate of project manuals to facilitate effective exchange of digital information between construction project team members.
"Digital communication systems based either on native data formats or interface definitions are insufficient," says Beucke. "They are exposed to many problems that can harm the transfer of digital data.
"Real solutions are found beyond this type of basic specification in project manuals." Beucke believes it is essential to specify project manuals that define everything required to create a problem-free digital communication environment in construction projects. Course content included system architecture of CAD systems, data structures, engineering object definitions and customising CAD systems. Beucke also covered exchange formats and integration approaches and 3D model oriented aspects of digital communication.
