Power corporation chooses geospatial system

1 August 2000

Intergraph Utilities has been selected through a competitive bid process to provide its Geospatial Resource Management solution to Montana Power Corporation. The solution incorporates Intergraph Utilities' GIS component, FRAMME, for creating, managing, editing and modelling facilities data in a rule-based environment. Intergraph is represented locally by sole dealer Intertech.
At the foundation of the project lies Intergraph's electric and gas software templates which provide robust functionality based on industry best practices and rapid implementation. The contract includes Intergraph's GIS flagship products, FRAMME, Field View and FRAMME Web View. The first phase of the project involves GIS data conversion, with Intergraph providing the lead consulting and conversion services.
Integration with SAP is planned for the second phase. In coordination with a pole inspection programme, The Montana Power Company has been collecting GPS data for several years. "We have partnered with the State of Montana for a cadastral database project. A GIS system will allow us to leverage that data to improve our operational efficiencies and better serve our customers," says Steve Shannon, of the Montana Power Company's division services. "In the future, we are interested in outage management and computer aided despatch. Intergraph provides a package that can be extended to include future technology. It also provides complete system integration services, so the Montana Power Company does not get caught in the middle between a vendor and a system integrator. I feel confident with the Intergraph team and their technical leadership." Based in Butte, Montana, the utility operates electric and natural gas transmission and distribution systems serving over 280 000 electric customers and 145 000 natural gas customers. The service area covers approximately 107 600 square miles spanning the continental divide.
